On October 19 and 20, the second hackathon in Saarland took place and brought together creative people interested in the IT industry. The aim of the event was to design various app or software projects that would provide a benefit to the general public. All of this happened without commercial pressure, but with a lot of fun. We are delighted that many of our colleagues supported this initiative and contributed their own ideas. A short summary of the weekend can also be found in the current report from SR.
A game made of trash and democracy on your phone
Numerous creative and charitable projects were conceived over the course of the weekend. Our Centigrade colleagues were involved in two of those ideas. Thomas Immich, CEO of Centigrade, entered the competition with an idea that had occupied him since a walk in the woods with his children. They had collected trash together and asked themselves: how can we reuse this material? This led to BinBall. Inspired by the well-known pinball machine, players guide a ball to the goal while found objects from the forest serve as obstacles. Together with a team of designers, developers, and other creative minds, a functioning game machine was built that proved especially popular with the children present.
The second project in which our colleagues participated aimed to make current political processes more transparent. Since much of this is already covered by the Democracy app, the team wanted to develop an extension for Democracy’s services. Petitions available on the Bundestag’s online platform were to be integrated into the Democracy database through this extension.
