Last week, from October 16 to 18, UX experts from all over Europe once again gathered at UX-DAY in Mannheim. For more than ten years, UX-DAY Mannheim has made an international name for itself with high-profile speakers and has established itself as a permanent event in the UX field. UX-DAY brings together UX experts and interested professionals, offering not only high-quality talks but also a unique networking platform. Representing Centigrade, Roman Rackwitz, gamification expert and enterprise gaming pioneer, contributed a much-noticed talk as a well-established part of the industry.
The P in UX stands for Player
Roman explained ways to combine player experience with user experience, two areas whose goals seem contradictory at first glance. While websites, software, machine operation, user interfaces, and more aim to avoid distractions and difficulties so that goals can be achieved as simply, quickly, and smoothly as possible, games seem to do exactly the opposite. Roman explored in his talk which knowledge and techniques from the games industry can nevertheless be beneficial for the UX field.
“If you look at human beings in their voluntary activities, such as play, sports, and hobbies, you might astonishingly assume that people actually enjoy achievement. In these intrinsically motivated activities, it is almost entirely about getting better, only to be challenged even more afterward. We need to rethink our model of human nature. Contrary to common opinion, people do not always seek the easiest way and do not act purely on the basis of reward.”
